Chafed skin is the result of repetitive irritation caused by friction, often caused through prolonged skin-to-skin contact of several body parts.
Commonly chafed skin is contracted on the inner buttocks and inner thighs; however, it is also very common on the nipples and armpits. It can be caused by friction or skin tags, which are very easy to deal with but not as common.
Skin irritation caused by chafed skin is usually a result of an allergic reaction which results from an excessive amount of friction from rubbing or touching of one part of the body to another. The skin irritation may be mild to severe and can occur almost anywhere but is most common on the buttocks. It usually occurs after several hours of use and will eventually fade away. Although it’s not an infection, it can be quite uncomfortable and can cause redness and swelling.
There are many different causes of chafing, but it is most commonly caused by skin tags. A skin tag is a tiny, flat bump that can become inflamed and irritated due to friction with skin. It can form anywhere from two to seven skin bumps and is most commonly found on the face, upper arms, chest, stomach and groin. It can grow quite large and harden, causing the skin underneath to become very sore and scratchy.
A skin tag will usually cause pain and irritation when rubbed or touched but will quickly fade away if treated immediately. Some treatments involve using chemicals to burn the skin tag to cause it to break open but this can be painful. It is important to try to treat the skin tag as soon as possible because the longer it remains it will be harder to get rid of.
If the skin tag is inflamed or infected, then the only way to treat it is through surgery. However, there are also other procedures which can help with this type of skin problem. Some of these include using ointments which lubricate the skin and reduce friction, applying cold compresses to reduce the amount of friction, or even surgery. In order to reduce friction, the best way is to change the way you wear your clothing or use the products that you use.
Some of the places where chafing areas are most common include the groin area, lower back, buttocks, upper thighs, back, elbows and shoulders. The groin is the area that produces the highest incidence of chafing because it has so much friction. Wearing tight underwear and jeans that sit on these areas or use hot pads on the affected areas can cause chafed skin in the groin area and back. This area is especially common in men but may be less obvious in women as some of the friction occurs in the vagina.
Other problems can be caused by using moisturisers on these areas. Moisturiser can help keep the skin cool in these areas and reduce friction and make them much more comfortable. Wearing loose clothing may reduce friction also.
When a chafed area does appear, there are many things you can do to try to reduce the itching and redness associated with chafing but these methods are just temporary and will not get rid of the problem permanently. It’s important to note that prevention is the best option to get rid of the problem. You should also make sure that your clothing fits properly and that you are not constantly rubbing and pulling at your skin when wearing clothes or running.
There are many simple ways of preventing chafing. These include avoiding the area being chafed by using gloves when doing household chores and ensuring that the area is not continually wet or damp.
If you do happen to experience excessive skin friction, it is very important to not scratch or pull on the area. If you do, this will spread the irritation further and it will be much more difficult to get rid of. This is also one of the major reasons why the area can become infected so it is important to prevent this from happening.
Chafing is something that occurs very often and can occur anywhere on the body. By taking preventive measures to avoid this problem and changing your lifestyle you can stop the irritating itching and redness from occurring in the future.
